  • AERON PURPLE STAR runner beans

    Hello fellow growers!

It's that time of the year again when I'm starting to send out my unique bean seeds to fellow amateur growers.

I've been breeding them for over fifteen years, they are the only true purple podded beans that I know of in existence - it's been a long road but well worth it.

For more info go to: http://aeronvale-allotments.org.uk/aeronpurplestar/ or just type Aeron Purple Star into your browser.

You can find out what others have said about these beans by going to:http://gardenerschat-shed.net/forum/...dback_form.htm

I give away these beans every year for free to amateur growers who request them, and I only ask a nominal £1.50 to cover my postage and packing costs. As I only have a limited number available the most I can share with any one individual grower is 24 beans. So it's 'first come - first served'!

They are tasty - have grown them 2 years in a row now. The ones I had in the first year refused to turn purple at any stage, but the ones this year exactly fitted the description and were lovely.

How strange! I've never heard of that happening before. You get the occasional 'greenie' due to a wandering bumble bee from another variety cross pollinating, (if they are not grown in true isolation), but then to find them reverting back the following season is incredible. I'll have to think about that one. Genetics is a wonderful subject and always full of surprises.

If you do 'run out' you know where I am.

I would say that I grew 12 plants and of those 12 only 7 plants gave black beans, the remaining 5 were green. Though they gave me a decent crop and the black ones did look good.
I will grow them again and see what happens, not sure how you stop them from cross pollinating. I grew them in a secluded spot of the garden, walled on 3 sides. Fingers crossed I get some black ones next year.

Runner beans are notoriously promiscuous! It's quite a job to keep them from cross pollinating. That's why these days a friend of mine - Rob Waterhouse - grows my seed stock down on his small holding in Devon. He's about two miles from any other growers. I haven't got that luxury where my plot is on the west Wales coast. Consequently I have to go to great lengths to guard against 'foreign' pollen being carried in, Rob has no worries on that front.

To be totally secure from cross pollination you need to be at least 800m from any other variety. Bumblebees don't get put off by walls! LOL!

That probably explains why nearly half of mine were green and not black!
