    Adding up the cost??

    Do any of you add up the equivalent cost of what you harvest from your gardens/ allotments?
    I was really suprised that when I did this (first year this year), comparing with a well known .com supermarket store that I have already harvested £45.00 worth of veggies - and the expensive fruit is yet to come!!!

    Not a great use of my time but very satisfying all the same

    PS - couldn't believe on courgette costs about 45p in the supermarket

    A couple of months ago tiny courgettes were on offer in our local supermarket. 3 tiny courgettes in a plastic packet £1.99 reduced from £2.99!!

      I haven't, mainly because I can't be bothered!!!

      But it is nice to eat food I wouldn't normally buy because of the price

        that is one of the reasons I have started growing aubergines. We eat loads and they are about £1 a time.

            We have harvested some 60lb of rhubarb and this retails at £2.49 for 3 stalks at tesco. Work it out.

                Schnapps?
                I think if you have an allotment or large garden you can save a fortune on fruit & veg. by growing your own but if you have a tiny garden like mine it's more the satisfaction of eating what you've grown yourself & the lovely fresh taste which is the reward.

                  At the beginning of the year I sort of hide my purchases of seeds and compost as they seem to mount up in cost. But I can't believe some of the prices in the supermarket at the moment. Three tiny sprigs of blue sprouting broccoli were 1.99!

                  Gettting a bit fed up of the rhubarb at the moment though. Anybody got a good recipe for rhubarb chutney?

                    Lesley,

                    well there is 16 pints of rhubarb schnapps on the go, 20lb of rhubarb and ginger jam for ourselves, family and friends and about the same frozen ready for icecream, crumbles etc. There is also the blueberries, black and red currants plus the goozgogs to weigh and convert into scrummy edibles.

                        I have set up a spread sheet and so far I have only entered expenses. We don't officially take over the allotment until April 2007 though we have already bought seeds, weed supressor, slug pellets, growmore etc. I hope that I shall be able to break even but time will tell. Still have shed to buy yet.
