  • Tough Skins on Cucs

    Hi Folks

This is my second year at GYO and growing Marketmore Cucumbers in the greenhouse

It is also the second year that the skins are really tough

Last year i thought that it may be because i didn't leave the long enough 6 - 7" so this year i have left tham alot longer 8 - 9" but still the same really tough skins

Could it be because they are supposed to be for outdoors and i am growing in greenhouse

Could it be my watering ragime ...... I have been told they dont like being stood in water but cept moist so water little but often.

Couldit be this year i grew them in buckets... but last year they were in raised beds in greenhouse and they had tough skins then

Could it be this is the norm for Marketmore Cucs that they have tough skins

Could it be the lack of sunshine that we seem to miss out on in Blackpool

Can anyone reccommend another tasty Cuc that doesn't produce thick tough skins

Any other suggestions would be great for me to try next year
    Cheers .... John

I grew cucumbers in '08 (tough) and was given a neighbour's glut this year (tough). I think it's just one of those things - they just grow softer in Tesco

I haven't grown cucumbers for years (don't really have the room any more). But the ones I used to grow were a greenhouse variety (can't remember the name unfortunately) and they were lovely. Outdoor cukes (or those bred to grow outdoors) do tend to have thicker skins.

Marketmore are an outdoor cuc John, mine have tough spiky skin but still lovely when peeled & no heartburn......

I find market more (outside & in greenhouse) rather stubby and tough skinned but very tasty.
My prima cucumber(outside) looks much more like the long supermarket variety but is much crispier & tastier.

Lemon crystal cucumbers are prolific, tasty & a great talking point.
