  • Avocados

The four items I buy most of in th fruit/veg aisle in the supermarket are mushrooms, carrots, celery and avocados. I have attempted to grow carrots, celery and mushrooms in the past ,.........and for varying reasons failed to get a decent crop. This year will be my last attempt at carrots (again).
For some reason I always asumed that avocados were grown in the tropics, but then I heard recently that a lot are grown in Spain. So, working the theory that most Mediterranean plants can be grown in an unheated greenhouse, can they be grown in the UK? Are there compact varieties? Has anyone tried, and succeeded, to grow them? I remember germinating one balanced with cocktail sticks over a jam jar of water years ago but can't remember what it's fate was.

It looks like growing Avocados is a long term project, I've found a couple of older threads hope this helps.

Mmmmm......sounds as if I would need a much, much bigger greenhouse. If they take at least 10 years to fruit it would probably help if I was much younger too.
I think avocados can go on the list of not practicals along with olives.

Not the UK - but this website says you can keep them pruned (as you would an apple etc) which would make them more manageable - how well they'd crop I don't know Can you grow an avocado tree in a small yard? - Greg Alder's Yard Posts: Food Gardening in Southern California
