  • side shoots

Hi. I have just started growing veg this year. My oh is just trying to put the greenhouse togeher, he got it for me for our 10th wedding aniversary. I am trying to grow tomatoes and alot of advise is to sideshoot them, I have to admit I am not sure what that is. What shoots do you remove? I hope I dont sound to silly. but I would like to do it right.

This is a great forum. I have been reading the magezines for afew months now.

Hi Strathy, welcome ,to the vine. The main stem of the tomato plant has branches going out like a tree?Well between the main stem and the branch you'll get growth, this is the bit that you take out(carefully) Have fun

This is a picture of a side shoot, they grow from the leaf axils.

Dont forget to pinch the top out when you don't want it to grow any higher.

And dont forget to plant the side shoots for extra plants in case you loose the mother plant.
