Does anyone know if fluid used to sterilise wine-making equipment (VWP brand contains something called chlorine donor) would harm vegetable plants if used to water them?

Probably - I certainly wouldn't use it. Use it to wash your used pots and containers instead.

Thanks. I had my doubts, but my other half is keen to conserve water and was reluctant to pour away 15 gallons of water that is cleaning the wine-making containers. I'll suggest he puts the plant pots in it instead!

Not sure if this applies to the type of sterilising fluid you have but when I popped into the local home brew shop to buy some granules to mix up the guy in there recommended pouring the left over liquid into two litre plastic bottles and saving it to sterilise the bottles when you come to use them.

He said it would last a week or so.

Not sure if that applies to all sorts of sterilising fluids/products though.

My sterilising solution (like Milton, but own-brand, T£sco or B00ts) is good for 24 hrs, the box says.

I use it to "bleach" the dishcloths, toothbrushes, face flannels and finally the sink, after the homebrew kit has been done

15 gallons! I only brew a gallon at a time, so don't need anywhere near as much sterilising solution as you - I make up just a litre and a half of sterilising stuff at a time.

That's enough to do a bucket (swish it around every few minutes); then and the jugs/tubes/corks/etc in another bucket, then it's into two bottles at a time for 10 mins, and another two and another etc ... I can keep going with bottles until I am bored - the bottles I'm not using right this minute are rinsed out and covered with a couple of layers of cling film, and they are sterile and ready to use next time.

If only have the bucket and pipes/jugs to steralise, I use boiling water.

            Nothing's gone manky to date.
