So an update - tunnel now has french beans, early cabbage, swiss chard, various lettuce, cukes and runner beans in the bed, calabrese, more lettuce, culinary herbs, sprouts, spinach, winter cabbage, savoy cabbage, red kale, green kale and Black Tuscan Kale plugs as well as approx 6000 baby leeks on the staging. In addition I have 60 hanging baskets with starwbs, which are rapidly ripening - I have to admit that the first few have tasted divine but I have to keep reminding myself that I amn growing these for cash, not for self indulgence, but it's sooooo hard
Now that the ground is no longer a dust bowl, planting out will begin with a vengeance on Saturday (Thursday and Friday are given over to my veg box deliveries)I have put support netting up for most of my peas, and sown another 240m of Hurst Greenshaft. All my Lady Christl and Charlotte tatties are through, but still waiting on the Red Dukes to show (planted a bit later as I was supposed to be getting Edzell Blues but that's a whole different story.)
In addition I have had the builders in at home so that's taken up some time, as has taking various photos at local events for Maggies magazine, collecting Iona from school, taking Iona to swimming / dancing lessons (Grade 3 Highland Dancing Exam this saturday !!) then Maggie complains when I go back out to the polytunnel / field at 9pm and don't get home til she's asleep - and I think Niamh wonders who the strange guy who plays with her for a half hour after tea is !!
I am still hopeful of getting connected to the mains water supply by July when they finish laying the 31km of new mains in the area - it's only taken 17 months to get it sorted
Until then it's me, watering cans and IBC tanks full of rainwater / quarry water. It takes me about 2 to 3 hours to water the tunnel fully each evening - usually get it done before it gets too dark. Anyway, this weeks boxes will contain some or all of the following - poatatoes, carrots, onions, cabbage, lettuce, rocket, rhubarb and chard. Later...................
