    Default Lancashire Lad peas

Earlier this year I was fortunate enough to have been given some Lancashire Lad pea seeds by a kind vine member. I now have a few of this years seeds going spare if anybody wants a few. I think the best way is to send about 30 seeds to the first three people to send me their address via PM.

I tried a few of the smaller early peas & was very pleased with them so just left them to dry out & produce seeds for next year with a few to pass on.

A - I've got bad news for you - Lancashire Lad [the purple ones] are not Lancashire Lad - they are an IMPOSTER!

b - I'll pop you into the Seed Swap section

Apparently, the 'real' Lancashire Lad pea is a green podded one, not purple.

So the purple ones that are currently being swapped and grown are deviant imposters.

HSL have removed the purple podded one from their reserves and are on the lookout for the green one.

So, unless you have a green one then it's still [I think] debatable as to what it's name will be.......if you DO have a green one, then I am sure HSL would love to hear from you [and I had a few rogue green ones in my Lancs Lads for 2 years running, so I've handed mine over to them and they are growing it out next year to see what happens....all very intriguing]....

So are the purple ones HSL or not? We saved some of them from last year because we thought they were a heritage variety.

Any ideas as towhat the purple ones may be?

Yes they are HSL. They sent them out in good faith for a number of years as Lancashire Lad and many people have grown and enjoyed them as such. However, that's not their name. It doesn't stop them being a good pea though. They are 'dad' to my strain of purple mangetout. The problem is only what to call them. The Pea Formerly Known as Lancashire Lad is clumsy but accurate!

Many of the HSL seeds are re-named. They tend to be called after the person who saved them, brought them back into use, or from which they were obtained by the person who donated them. What's in a name?
