    Argh! Evil slugs ate my beans!

    Of course, just the rare ones I had 5 seeds each for!

    Has anyone come across any sites other than baker creek (as they were limited to a pack per person, though I may email and ask on the off chance if I have no luck finding other sources) that sells:

    Weinlanderin pole beans,
    Grandma Nellie's yellow Mushroom,
    Swiss Landfrauen

    Am looking too in a panic but no luck yet!

    With that and Monastic ones not germinating and my peas all being sparrow eaten it's been a heck of a week!

    Sorry - I don't. I've lost about 10 types of rare beans so I'm growing what I've sown that hasn't been eaten [surprisingly, it's the dwarf ones that are still there, the climbers were all eaten] and leaving it for a year. Just sticking to common and garden borlottis and some others that I have plenty of seeds of and will resume again next year.

      I can't help with the beans - but I sympathise.
      The barstewards ate my Trionfo Violetto beans, my Crown Prince, Blue Hubbard and Marina di Chioggia squashes. I resowed them all and they ate them all again.

      Given up with them til next year as well *big sigh* and I'm feeling very disillusioned now

        Thanks for the sympathy guys, feeling slightly less gutted - each has one plant left with a growing tip on closer inspection, so am going to be on scissors protective duty later. I also re-read the site and looks like either I misread or the conditions have changed on the ones I got, so have managed to reorder for next season! Phew! Hope you both have spares of what you lost, in seeds at least!

        Sorry to hear about your seedlings being munched on too. Almost everyone I know has gotten to the third sowings of things!

        Have just sown similar out of my seed bag for another attempt just to get something growing as suggested. Spose at least it's an excuse for a shopping spree for next season... after all, I did find some interesting sites in Canada while I was searching!

          (after a foray out with a torch, 39 snails later and only 5 slugs I have to amend this to Evil Snails that probably ate my beans... Also, wth is it with worms and the freaky fast movement when light hits them!? Scared the wotsits out of me! )

            I have evil snails too. Little barstewards are sneaky, they hide and they can climb and they've eaten loads of my stuff this year.

              I never knew I had so many! Does crushing their shells kill them or do you have to be sure to squish the snail bit too incidentally? Spose at least the slug nematodes have worked!

                Interesting. I've been moaning about slugs but in truth after having used the nemotodes and thrown a load of magic blue sweeties at them perhaps it is those greedy snails after all. My 5 year old niece loves to squash them in their snails...hmmmm wonder if she wants to come for a play date this weekend?

                    I was hitting them with scissors. Spose I should just collect and take them to The Patio of Snail Oblivion instead so that they can meet my Foot of Doom +1.

                      There is nothing more satisfying when you have a flat surface underfoot. The only time they get thrown is when they are on my gravel. Sometimes I'm amazed at how far I can hurl them. They are quite aerodynamic!

                        I cannot, literally cannot, bring myself to stamp on or snip a slug or snail. I have had the odd hurl, but I have to apologise to them before they take flight. Salt water is the only way for me - but I'm sure its just as painful for them as all the other methods.

                            Me neither - even by accident makes me squirm. I throw them in the canal and hope they can't swim or get eaten by ducks first.
