  • No gain without pain!

Well I finally got round to gathering my quinces! Problem is, I fell out of the tree while gathering them and I am nursing a bruised and swollen arm!

Luckily I jumped up and no-one seemed to be watching me so only my arm was hurt and not my pride!

Managed to get a few recipes from a website thanks to palustris!

Don't know which I'll try yet ...maybe all!

    Quince jam
    Categories: Condiments
    Yield: 1 Servings
    See Below
Rub quinces of with towel, peal, remove seeds, and chop into small pieces. Put peel and seed parts into pot. Cover barely with water and cook for 30 - 45 minutes. Strain and add loquid to fruit; dispose of solids. Weigh mixture on scale and ready as much sugar on the side. Cook mixture for 30 minutes. Add sugar. Keep cooking and stirring until mixtures drips of ladle in wide, heavy drops. Remove foam. (I put the foam into a seperate bowl and eat it after it has cooled down. Delicious!) Fill into glasses (preheat or put spoon into glass to avoid cracking) and close airtight immediately.

    Quince marmalade
    Categories: Condiment 1941
    Yield: 6 servings
    3 ⅓ pounds Quinces
    1 Orange
    4 ½ pounds Sugar
    1 cup Orange juice
    2 cup Water
Wash, quarter, and core quinces. Quarter, seed, but do not peel orange. Put quinces and orange through food chopper. Add sugar, water, and orange juice. Simmer slowly, stirring frequently, until juice sheets from spoon.

    Apple quince jelly
    Categories: Condiment 1941
    Yield: 6 servings
    2 pounds Apples
    2 pounds Quinces
    Sugar
Wash apples. Remove stems, seeds, and blossom ends. Do not pare. Cut in quarters. Cover with water. Cook until very soft. Drain through jelly bag. Wash quinces. Remove stems, seeds, and blossom ends. Do not pare. Cut in small pieces. Cover with water. Cook slowly until very soft. Drain through jelly bag. Combine apple and quince juice in equal proportions. Use 2/3 cup sugar for each cup juice. Boil rapidly until jelly sheets from spoon.

Still got one arm left to stir with anyway! LOL

Sorry to hear about the arm Snadger, I hope it isnt too painful and the bruises quickly go down! Have you tried some witch hazel on the bruises? It brings them out quicker, Mr D swears by the stuff!

      Oh dear Snadger....!
Do you have any Comfrey on your plot???
It is fantastic in the reduction of bruising/ sprains..( one of MY 'tricks of the trade' - health wise)...boil up in a small amount of water and wrap the leaves over the painful area. 3-4 times a day for 1/2 hr per session!
Then drink loads of rhubarb schnapps ( Only joking..but am sure that would aid recovery!!!)

Well done on the quinces though!!

Please stay out of the trees Snadger. We don't want to lose you. Hope your arm mends quickly. A cold compress will help the swelling to go down. Favourite method is a bag of frozen peas wrapped in something. Look after yourself and hope the quince recipes work out great.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

Is that an ointment I can get from the chemist Mrs D? Not that I want to bring any more bruises out if I can help it!

I think it was when I tried to save myself and was hanging like a monkey on the branch with one arm! Damn thing nearly ripped my arm out of joint!

Must admit if I had seen it happen to someone else I would probably have been creased up with laughter!

Hi Snadger, yes local chemists or Boots should have it in! There's a couple of Witch Hazel products available, Witch Doctor which is a gel and great on burns, stings and grazes, but a tad pricey at £3 or so for a little tube, but for what you want I'd suggest Witch Hazel water, about £2 for 500ml, its antiseptic and astringent and lovely and soothing, especially if you apply it in a compress for a couple of hours!

Nick ...I said 'grasping' ( just incase you are in one of those moods!!)
Sorry Snadger...hope you improve quickly and get plenty of fussing over!

Frozen peas are wonderful, aren't they? A few years ago I nearly managed to convince myself that I hadn't seriously damaged my ankle (until I gave in and went to A & E), because the peas kept the swelling down. It was only when I realised I really couldn't stand on it and that although it wasn't swollen it was very black and blue that I gave in and called for help.

Seriously though, in case of accidents to joints, please remember as first aid to put on a cold pack (this is where frozen peas come in - everyone has them), rest (don't try to use your arm/leg), elevate the part affected (foot on stool - arm rested above heart height) - this reduces bleeding.

If in doubt, please get expert advice - don't put it off

                  OK -serious now...
If you think you have bleeding into a joint ..you MUST go to hospital- otherwise you will end up with osteoarthritis of that joint. ( no maybe with that!)

Snadger - what were you thinking. Along with all the other advice, you could try some Arnica 30c or 6c (I'd go with the first for two doses and then to the latter).

Nicos and rustylady are right though if in any doubt get it checked.
                    Bright Blessings

Thanks to you all for your concern! Its not really too bad and I shouldn't need to take any time off work. I've had 2 days sick in 20 odd years so I aint gunna start now!

I think it was me trying to recapture my youth when we used to go apple scrumping!

I used to be quite proud that my name was always carved into the top branches of the trees and when my mates climbed the trees after carving there name they looked up to that unatainable branch and there it was in bold letters 'SNADGE' Hey hey

Never mind, it's taught me you can't turn back time as time waits for no man!

Looking forward to utilizing the quinces though!

Re-capturing youth is always tempting. It can lead to some embarrassing situations though - like getting stuck in the window you told your kids you were sure you could climb through (technique fine - hips several sizes larger than last time you tried)

I was always the mug who got caught up the tree - I was the smallest (and a girl) who climbed up for the apples whilst the boys waited for me to throw them down. Unfortunately the boys always did a runner when they heard someone coming. Times I got a clip round the ear from the village bobby, and another one from my dad when he took me home (GOOD OLD DAYS, NO ASBOS and no real harm done to anyone)
