  • We are chook owners!!!!

We have our three warrens. Will post pics tomorrow as by the time Madmax had finished work, we had been and chosen 3 of the 4 available (hoping we will find we actually have space for the 4th one, though she did have other breed friends) got them home and into their coop, it was too dark to take pics.

Ludo (dog) was running round the ark trying to work out what had arrived. One girl was brave enough to go through the pophole and have a quick wander round the run, much to his interest! Cat (TRex) watched from a discreet distance

Tomorrow looks like being great fun. Madmax announced if it is dry he is going to sit on a stool beside the run watching the henny penny's

Indeed so, that and reading up on stuff I have long ago forgotten! Now trying to remember how much layers pellets they are supposed to have each! It is very different having 3 to having 30 like when I was younger!

What a weekend this is going to be for you, hope the weather stays dry so that it doesn't spoil the "chook tv""

Don't measure out layers pellets, give them as much as they will eat and leave plenty of water.

Another shout for piccies over here. I'm dying to hear how they behave though, and how they adapt, find a pecking order, how quickly they learn to put themselves to bed at night.

                      Here's to a great weekend!

Piccies on their way as soon as I can persuade the camera and crappy lappy to chat to each other!

Tis drizzling here today so only got a couple of quick shots of them. We have decided we will need to build a bigger, permanent run for them as they are destroying the lawn already (not that it is a great lawn) so my dreams of never mowing again are dashed!!

Pecking order is no problem - they were hatched together and had their place in a group of eight chooks. We moved them at dusk last night and they were put straight into the coop. They were amusing this morning seeing grass for (I think) the first time.

Edit - I forgot to say the funniest thing ever was TRex - he came stalking down the garden to see what was afoot this morning, watched for a short while then ran off cowering!!! He is now sat under the garden table hypnotised but when they cluck he nearly jumps out of his skin - hilarious!!

Well, just gave them a corn on the cob to see what happened. The boss lady (younger son has named her Cardinal Puff Puff the third - those who like Dad's Army might understand) attacked it immediately. The other two girls (yet to be named) just stood and watched.

They're fascinating aren't they? We spent a lovely hour this afternoon just sitting on two wooden chairs in the run and watching our new girls settle in. I don't think we've relaxed that much since we were first together eight years ago and used to spend contented evenings sitting in front of the fire watching the flames.

I've got four tiny, semi-failed corn cobs from the veg patch, so they're on the menu for the girls for tomorrow!
