  • Silly question 2!

Whilst walking the dog this morning I noticed the combine harvester was working in a nearby field.
As I walk the dog around another field of wheat, she hadn't pooped so I had a spare carrier bag. I decided to 'nick' some corn to see what the chooks would think of it. I only nicked about a pound or so from the very edge!
Anyway, I gave it to the chooks with the husk on and they gobbled it down, husk and all! Will they be ok do you reckon?

It was a toss up between trying to make a loaf of bread with it or try it on the chooks!

Expensive loaf of bread.........especially if I got caught!

Snadger I was going to send a bag so you could get some for my girls to. Unfortunately you're a bit too far away. Mine love corn on the cob so I hang it up and it keeps them occupied for longer. They've never eaten the husk though.

And when the farmer walks passed your veggies with an empty poop bag, will you begrudge him ?

What has been spilled (or missed by the cutter for being too close to the hedge) is legitimate 'gleanings' if you have a right to be there. Nicking it from the uncut crop is theft (even if too petty to bother about). Next time pick up the spillages from where the combine has already been (there is always quite a bit somewhere in the field). Already out of the ear (so you get more in the bag), and legal!
At one time there was an organic farm near where we lived which also had a bakery and sold 'made on the premises' bread. They also sold 'tail corn', the smaller grains which don't make good flour (and being organic, some weed seeds with it). Apart from kitchen scraps, my chickens got little else at the time (we did supply oystershell).
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

you missed a trick. Should've sowed some so you can grow your own chook food ... but then they dog won't need walking so much
