  • Happy 'n' sad 2 years on

Hello my name's Squeaky and this is my friend Ginger and we're ex-battery hens.
We thought you might like to know that we've been at Suechooks allotment now for 2 years this very weekend, and we're very happy girls. Sometimes we feel a bit sad cos the rest of our friends who came out with us have gone to Chooky heaven but really we know they had a lovely time as well.
Neither of us lay many eggs now but we luv just scratching round and bossing the other girls about. We specially like our lunch treats - bread or pasta or spuds or veggy peelings and things with some mealworms.
We'd like to send lots of BOkboks to all the other ex-batts living happy free lives like us.
    Love from Squeaky and Ginger

lovely sue - keep it up. are you going to Morda next weekend? "assuming" we get a hire car we might well come over. Jen had hers written off in the snow by some silly person in a 4x4 truck.

4x4's are like nuclear weapons. you need one to counter act the others out there!

Aaahhhh, that's great 2 years. It's sad about the others but you never know what they went through before they came to you. My second lot of ex-batts seem a lot healthier than the first ones. They came from a different farm so perhaps were in a better class of prison.

Bokbokbokchookbokchook Squeaky and Ginger. Isn't it lovely to be out of prison and living in the fresh air My human has had some of us rescued chickens for nearly as long as you, but the first and second lots all went to chooky heaven with your friends thanks to the nasty Mr Fox Here's some pictures of Myrtle from the first lot, and of us when she brought us to our nice new home. We don't lay many eggs now either, but human said we can stay 'cos we've all grown nice new vests and knickers and we're not flashing our bare bums at everybody One of our gang is called Precious and she went a bit silly last year and decided she wanted to be a Mummy so all her hooligans now live next door, we can see them but they're a bit too jumpyabouty for us gentle laydeez so they can stay where they are till they calm down a bit.

my ex batt freddie found yogurt today!!! and it tastes so goood!

then I let them out into the big wide world, well the rest of the allotment and wow, however one pointer.....

DO NOT plant onion sets and expect them to be there when you get back from the compost heap!!! Freddie gained some confidence by picking them out and throwing them over her back!

I promptly planted them back and gave her a shove in the direction of the compost bins!

                              Farewell my Squeaky girl

Now feeling really sad as I've just had Squeaky pts. She was "waddling" for the last few weeks but even up to last night was jumping up for her corn (always liked it out of my hand so no one else could pinch it or push her out of the way). However this morning she could barely walk and her tail was down so I felt her time had come. The vet offered to try and drain some of the fluid off but we decided that this was only going to prolong her discomfort.
I know we shouldn't have favourites but she was always so scared of the other hens that she became very special as she'd run to me for safety if anyone tried to bully her.
For her last 6 months she was with a group of younger Warrens and so she became top hen albeit for a limited time.
RIP Squeaks xx Lotsa corn and worms in Chooky heaven

I use a mix of six scoops of compost three scoops of sand/grit and two scoops of perlite, the quantity is unimportant as long as the ratio is the same, if for seeds I use this mix, if I am potting on I add some blood, fish and bone, along with a small quantity of chicken manure pellets
