  • Ex Battery Hens - West Yorkshire?

I'm looking to get some ex battery hens (around 20)... however I'm struggling to find anywhere to get these in the local area. I'm in west yorkshire... anyone know where I can get some ex battery hens around here?

I'd love to save some hens!

Try Googling the Battery Hen Welfare Trust, they have regional co-ordinators. There might be one near you. I'm in South Yorks and I believe my nearest one is in Lincolnshire, but there could be one closer to you than that. You have to contact them before they do a rescue as they only take those they have homes for, then you'll be told when the rescue date is and will have to collect them from a pre-arranged pick-up point.

Yes, the nearest Battery Hen Welfare Trust co-coordinator is over 2 hours drive away from me unfortunately. I'm ideally looking for something a little closer.

If there are any battery egg farms near you, the farmers often let a few go to be re-homed either when they've finished with them or just before they go in. Not sure how you'd find out though, it's a sensitive area and they might not like to advertise what they're doing. Perhaps a local butcher who sells eggs in trays might be able to point you in the right direction?

Edit : Just found this site http://www.mylocalservices.co.uk/lis...6&category=666 not sure if it'll help but might be worth a try

Not sure exactly whre you are in Yorks but here are some that a roughly up your way.

http://www.henrehomers.net/ - based in London but are nationwide with a coordinator in Harrogate.

Theres also 1000 Happy Hens in Market Rasen - I'm sure if you google them then they will come up.

Battery hen Welfare trust are nationwide, I know you said that your nearest person was 2 hours drive away but have you tried contacting them anyway, you never know they may meet half way or maybe have family nearby who they visit often and can drop off en-route, they may deliver or may even know someone nearby who resuces hens - don't dismiss them based on an asumption

            Cheers

I would have thought you could get to Lincoln in well under 2 hours from pretty much anywhere in West Yorks. Even so, they often have collection points at a distance from the co-ordinator, which may prove to be nearer to you.
