  • Egg Bound?

Very late last night, - we were trying to convince the girls that it was bedtime, so I suppose it would have been about 8.30pm - Sadie, the largest of our Rhodie girls suddenly squatted down and laid an egg. It had an extremely soft shell, like thin ice on a pond when it's started to break up, but even so as she's been in lay for less than a week nothing too unusual... except that 20 minutes later she laid another one, the shell of which was so thin it was virtually see through, we could even make out the yolk inside, though there was definitely some shell and not just membrane. Does this mean she was egg bound? I always think of that as if the hen has difficulty laying, but she seemed to have no problem at all in laying either egg. She was showing absolutely no signs of being under the weather and laid the first one while out happily free-ranging, the second one arrived after she'd gone back in the run, just before she went in to bed. This morning though I've noticed that her bottom is a little dirty, but it looks like egg white rather than poo. What's going on???? I know I've been really lucky with our hens, few problems and the ones we have encountered have been minor, but this has me a little worried.
She seems perfectly well this morning and is eating, drinking and acting normally.

Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

How strange! I'd guess that she hasn't established her 25 hour cycle yet and is popping eggs out willynilly so they aren't having time to get the shell layer, which is last in the conveyor.
I'd keep an eye on her but guess she'll settle into a proper rhythm shortly. As long as she doesn't look poorly she should be ok. If you're concerned you could do the warm bath treatment and that would clean up her bottom as well.

I did the warm bath, and it seemed to work, although I got a soft egg today - as per the other post.....

but she is not unhappy so I'm just keeping an eye on them
