  • Which willow to buy

    Hi,
Was wondering which type of willow I need to uses as supports for plants. Have looked around locally and can't see any wild or in any ones garden that I could ask for.
So if I bought a plant which one would I have to get and where from?
    Thanks

I have ordinary common Goat Willow which I pollard every year and this gives me thin but long canes for the garden. If I leave it two years then I have bean poles. You must let the sticks dry out as if you use fresh sticks you will have a willow plantation!

Salix caprea (Goat Willow or Pussy Willow) grows abundantly near rivers and streams around here, and is a useful plant for screening. As mentioned by Roitelet, green sticks pushed into the ground will grow quite happily, especially if watered, as it will root right the way up the stem. Free hedging for those in the know, so take secateurs with you next time you're out wandering!
