Frustrating start....

    Frustrating start....

    Hi all, newbie to veggies and feeling really frustrated..

    Cleared and dug over a patch about 7 metres by 4 metres, got all the soil nice and fine, hoed it to death to make it totally clear.. and now am baffled as to what to do..

    It has become very apparent I could not of picked a worse time to have ground empty and ready for planting..

    Any tips on things I may be able to plant over the winter would be great, otherwise things I shouldbe doing to anempty plot until spring arrives...

    You can plant overwintering onion sets and garlic. Sow some overwintering broad beans and peas. And you may be able to pick up some spring cabbage plants from garden centre. If you plan to have soft fruit (raspberries, blackcurrants etc) they can be planted around now.

      And if there's any space you can't find plants for cover it, either with an overwintering green manure, or even a layer cardboard covered in manure or compost.
      Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

        If you do have more space, plant the overwintering onions out with more space inbetween them; they grow bigger and you can interplant your spring crops in the spaces and take the onions out when you are ready.

          At the rate you aquiring chooks Smoggy the area dug will probably eventually become a chook run!

          PSB need loads of spacing and would fill the area admirably............and...........supply loads of foliage for the chooks!

            Thank you guys and gals..

            Your not wrong bout the chooks Snadge, 5 more today ..lol

            Aquired some spring cabbage plants and also some winter onions, so at least I can practice before spring comes... On the look out for some manure now, plenty about were I live - so shouldn.t be too difficult to sort..

            Great advice peeps, will let you know how I go, and no doubt pester you with other stuff along the way..
