  • Companion planting - Onions and the rest

    Hi there,

I am in my second year of growing veg and have a question about onions.

I just want to know if anyone knows of any problems I might have if I plant say 40-60 onions together? They will be at the top of my largest bed with radish down the sides and lettuce and cabbage next to them.

I'm just trying to get my companion planting right to ensure the best growth.

If anyone has any advice regarding this and other companion planting issues I would very much appreciate it.

    Happy growing and stay safe.

    Thanks

    Red/brown mixture

Also can I plant a mixture of red and brown sets together in the same bed? My varieties are Red Baron and Stuttgarter.

    Thanks

I hope so that's what I did earlier this week
      Cheers

Personally, as a "bung it in" gardener, I see no problems doing what your doing. The key thing to do is - plant the sets - not overthink it and delay.
Red and brown onions may mature at different times so it might be worth planting them in separate blocks, in the same bed.
Next yearm plant them in a different bed to avoid any disease build-up.

I concur with VC, you can plant ANY varieties of Onions together, red or brown and different varieties. Just make sure you plant the same variety together so you know which are which as they do mature at different times. Always ensure next year you plant onions in a different area so you don't encourage any diseases to occur or build up in the soil.
