  • Can I use grass clippings directly?

My lawn is only about 4mx4m so I get about one bucket of clippings per cut... this time of year that's 1-2 times a week. I have been putting it in next door's composter but wondered can they be used directly on my garden at all? I don't really have space - or the inclination - to compost anything in my town-house postage stamp, but was trying to figure out if putting them down straight onto beds would lead to them self-composting, or aid in preventing weeds, or anything?

Yes use them as a mulch. Two things to bear in mind though. Have you used a weed killer recently? There is something on the packet usually about composting clippings. Also don't make the layers too thick or they will heat up and scorch your plants, but that doesn't sound like it would be too much of an issue for you.

The other thing I like to do is only collect the clippings ever second cut... we sit on the lawn so it's a balance between leaving them lying about and collecting it all up.

      Good reminder about weedkiller.

If you are cutting twice a week then the clippings are only going to be short and will compost down in situ. I collect them as I can't bear grass in the house!

I use my clippings as a mulch on everything: this week they went on the lettuce bed, sometimes they go on the onions or the potatoes. They soon decompose and disappear.

you don't have one, but they're a good activator on the compost heap too
