    3 cunning plans to elude the carrot fly

    I’ve never really had much luck with carrots. The first year I planted them in the roots bed, but they were annihilated by carrot flies. I’d even covered them up with an old bit of voile I had floating around (Cunning plan #1), but to no avail. The odd few that avoided the assault came out odd shapes :-(

      Fly resistant carrots do not work unless you put a sacrificial crop of none resistant types nearby,found resistant ones not very tasty.Flies can,and will,fly as high as they like if wind is still.Vigilant envoirmesh covering is the only answer for the allotment/garden grower.

      the only way to make sure you dont get carrot fly is to build a barrier approx 20 inches height completly around the area you plant.

      i build a frame out of bamboo and cover verical sides with fleese and bury the bottom of the fleese
      cost approx fleese £10-15 bamboo old runner bean sticks..

      works a treat perfect crop no damage...
