    Afternnon All

I am thinking of traveling back to my childhood days when my grandparents had hydrangeas in the garden.

With the amount of growing space I now have i want to create a border one end.

    Any views on modern cultivars?

I don't like the mophead varieties much but do have a pretty white lacecap that fades to pink.
I couldn't tell you its name as I pinched a cutting from a friends garden. Freebies are always best - so have a nose round your friends' gardens to see what they have

      Are they easier to propagate?

They are easy to propagate.. I have taken cuttings from my own hydrangea a few times and they have always taken. Best to use shoots that haven't flowered and has no buds on it.
And I do love the mophead ones, in fact I love them all

I have hydrangea paniculata Vanilla Fraise. Big cone flowers start cream/white, turn pink and end up a dark pink, over about three months. I bought a little one quite cheap last year and it flowered beautifully, now grown quite a bit bigger. It's really pretty.
Mostly flowers, some fruit and veg, at the seaside in Edinburgh.

I found a piece of hydrangea lying on the ground after my brother had pruned his a couple of years ago. Stuck it in a pot just to see what would happen, nothing happened but this year it has a few leaves on it. How long would it normally take to start rooting?

Pleased to hear about taking cuttings Sarriss, thank you,i got a beauty 2 years ago, label has took leggs, the blooms on it are pale pink and white tinge, the shape is more elongated, like a large cone shape, will have to take 2 or 3 cuttings,do you take a bit off a heal,as in dahalia, powder and pot,or water until roots.

Propagation instructions with pics here https://www.burncoose.co.uk/site/con...s+-+Care+Guide

scroll about halfway down the page to see them

Mine rooted easily without using rooting powder.

I stuck my cuttings into the sides of a pot, no root powder or anything, and whilst I can't see any growth on top, it hasn't changed at all either, so I'll happily leave them where they are.
