  • What fertiliser to use?

    Hi

I'm fairly new to gardening and need some advice about soil.

I have a border round the grass which includes heathers, blueberry bush, clematis, primula, hostas, azalea, hydrangea amongst other plants. We have been planting bedding plants amongst these plants in the border for several years and just wondered if I should treat the soil to any fertiliser or anything else that will be ok for the variety of plants? What would be the best overall "stuff" to use?? (Apologies for any plant spelling mistakes!)

    Thanks
    Nic

I use pelleted chicken manure as a general feed. Very roughly, I use one handful per square metre. Hungry feeders, like roses and clematis might get an extra handful. Rake it in or if it doesn't rain you could water it in.

I don't feed any of my flower borders, not even roses. They do, however, get the weeds: any weeds I pull are chopped up and just left on the soil as a mulch. The worms soon pull them down.
