  • Technical query?

Lime brassicas to create alkaline conditions!

Don't lime tatties because it causes scab!

Don't manure carrots or parsnips because it causes forked roots!

All the rest, don't apply lime and manure together????? eek...Why???

I suspect that one's acid and one's akaline so they cancel each other out. unless, of course, you know different!

The lime reacts with the manure.

Lime increases the ph value making the ground more alkaline but if you put the lime on at the same time as the manure the two react, literally heat up! you risk scorching your plants in more ways than one!

I don't know enough chemestry to be properly specific but that is the general answer.

The only reason I ask is that one of the guys at the allotments spreads manure then puts lime on top and always grows fantastic veg. I told him he shouldn't be doing it, to which he replied "Why? Works for me"!

Cool! Well there is always the odd case to prove the rule I suppose. I just follow the books - which is where my information generally comes - find out how much of each he uses and try it yourself!

I'd love to know the results
