    What I Have Done So Far...Part 3

Since the start of this year, I have also planted some more Broad Beans in pots at home and also some peas in pots. These went in last weekend.

The reason I have started them at home is because I havent' prepared the beds where they are to go. What with the snow in recent weeks and general poor weather I haven't been able to get up to the lottie for a while.

Towards the end of Jan I did go up there and half prepared the pea and bean bed, but still need to dig in some manure to give them a good start. For some reason I thought it would be a good idea put the poles in ready for the peas. WHY??? I will need to take them out to dig in the manure. Waste of time, never mind, should be easy to mvoe and replace.

Back at home I have planted leek seeds, 64 seeds which I am not sure if are going to be enough to fill the leek bed, but I can always sow a few more later in the season for a later harvest.

Last weekend I also started off some spring onions. I have taken an idea from the vine, and sown groups of six seeds, and in total sown 32 groups. Again not sure if this will fill the area I have planned for them, so may have to sow some more in a while.

What else, umm. I did start some tomatos, but they haven't done anything, so chucked them in a bag ready for the compost heap and will start again soon.

Last weekend I read a thread about cheap heated propogators in B&Q, so on Sunday morning I went a got a couple. Just right for the job. I planted one with Broccolli, Purple Sprouting Broccolli and Brussel Sprouts. In the other three types of peppers. I also got a timer plug so they are not on turn on and off numerous time throughout the day. To be honest, I left them to get on with it, and just by chance on Friday I checked them, to find loads of the first propogator (Broc/Sprouts) had loads of seedlings. But because I wasn't expecting them to germinate and show so fast they didn't have much light, so they ar all leggy. Rubbish. I ahve moved them outside into the cold greenhouse to see if the cold and extra light with strengthen them. Might transplanted them into pots and see what happens.

One thing about these propogators is that the show you to put the soil direct in the base. I may fill the base with vermiculite (sp?) and use small plant pots in them. This will mean that I can easily move them outside into the greenhosue as soon as the majority show and reduce the problem of leggy seedlings.
