  • Bit of grey hair...

    Hello All,

I'm an ageing retired passionate gardener with an allotment down the road and a garden at 'The Turrets', which is full of tomatoes, cucumbers sweet corn and other comestibles, but 'The Patch', is where I dream about taking on the three empty plots nearby, and get told in no uncertain terms (and in a serious voice) by Mrs Growser, that it's too much, and stop day-dreaming and go and mow something...

We've had an allotment on and off since 1984 and garden from thirty-four 8' x 4' beds with flattened grass paths for easy mowing. We tend to rotate the planting in all directions, sometimes at the same time, as we don't spend too much time on dead-straight lines. At the moment, nearly all our Swift earlies have been eaten by slugs, so we've hoiked them out and sown swede and spinach, which had better work or else! Having failed at onions over several years, the latest crop is beginning to show and go to seed - blast - but hey-ho, the garlic is looking great, as are the runners and the broads and peas, so it's not all bad!

I keep looking at the blackcurrants as they need a damn good weeding, but reckon that next year we'll dig them out, and move them to give the bed a rest, but it's these choices of national importance which we all have to make isn't it! We're also giving strawbs another go this year but had a devil of a time to get leeks germinated for some reason! We always try for well over 200, and they're still a bit too tiny! We've never had any problems before and I wonder if anyone else has experienced this!

Hope I can contribute to the banter here, I may also be able to shed a little experience occasionally, but Growsers don't really take life too seriously...

What ho Growster - good to see you again. Jumped ship too eh?
They're are a number of familiar faces here - some going by different monickers some the same old same old. Glad to hear the 'Turrets' are still standing.
Friendly lot here - I've not had a proper telling off (yet) since joining in April - so some might say the mods are slackers (not me I hasten to add!!!)

        Welcome aboard!

Growster I wondered how long it would take you to find us all, as Balders says nice friendly lot here the mods just moderate and aren't power crazy or psychotic as far as I've seen, there is one with a pointy stick and so far Balders and I have not been poked.

Mornin' Mr Growster A warm welcome to our Vine to you!
Sounds like you've got heaps going on there ~~ sounds like a brill retirement plan, Mr G. Something I am looking to do - eventually ............

Hmm, leeks ... Rubbish for me - started in modules 20 - of which a measly 4 germinated ..... Ever hopeful, they've been planted out, they're the thickness of a thin piece of wire 'tho, so not much hope for them .....

Anyhoo, enjoy the banter and carry on gardening..!!
