Week 4 - working the late shift...

Reading through the posts I always feel a ting of jealousy when our retired grapes post about spending days pottering about on the plot... still being of an age where I must work for a living to keep the taxman at bay (and this gets harder every budget - thank you very much Mr Chancellor!) my time is strictly limited.

This week for example although I've planted some of the peppers, I've not had chance to put the new cold frame together as I've been working the late shift and haven't seen the garden in daylight for a whole week. This is especially frustrating as I want to see how the garlic is getting on! Going to be pressed for time this weekend as well, have to go and sort out a bathroom light for a tennant on Saturday and have my brother and his family coming over for tea that evening, not that I begrudge seeing my brother you understand.. but I'd rather be planting!!!

I really can't wait for those long lazy days, when I can get in from work and then spend a good hour or so pottering round, bit of watering, some weeding and some picking. Of course I blame it all on my upbringing, both of our neighbours were keen vege gardeners, and developed an intense rivalry over tomato growing, right up to the point of painting ping pong balls red and tieing them to the plants!

I just wish that the house I've got now had the garden I grew up in, it was huge and would give me space for loads of raised beds, but never mind, as gardeners we need to make the best of what we've got, and that includes the good old british weather. Have yet to discover any long range weather forecast daring to predict what this summer might be like, in fact I can't even find out if we're likely to have any heavy frosts - I hope so or it may be a case of dropping the planters in the freezer overnight!

Although like most grapes I'm desperately waiting for spring, I would love to see a good snowfall this winter.. just like the ones I remember as a child, a good 18 inches of snow down - you're never too old to go sledging :-)

Well that's it for week 4... more in week 5.
