Week 3

Well according to my trusty diary we are now into week 3 of 2008, that means only 47 shopping weeks until Christmas :-)

Well the weather sort of defeated me last weekend, that and the domestic chores. Did however finally get around to planting the garlic, it had started to sprout so I'm not sure how successful it will be, it's the first time I've tried garlic anyway so it's all an exciting adventure, 16 cloves planted into tubs that are now sat in the greenhouse.

Better still managed to sow the strawberry seeds :-) 500 mignonette seeds from B&Q.. don't need this many but I've heard mixed reports of germination so here's hoping we can get a 25% success rate, anything over that can always go at a car boot sale. The next biggest hurdle will be when it comes to pricking out and persuading my nearest and dearest that the dining table is a suitable home for that many seed trays.

My biggest gripe of the weekend however is how hard it is to get replacement glass for the greenhouse, none of our DIY and Garden superstores seem to stock this, plan b was to grab some polycarbonate, after seeing the price that was soon kicked into touch! I appreciate that the only way these places can offer us a lot of items is to pile it high and sell it cheap, and there won't be a year round demand for the odd pane of greenhouse glass, perhaps I'm being daft but I would have thought the autumn winter period the ideal time to stock a few panes of 600mm, especially with the gales we seem to get each year now.

That will be it for planting for the next 4 weeks, time to sit back work out the full crop list for the year and plan out where it's going.. still the digging to do on the beds though- if this rain ever lets up!
