  • Tarragon Question

    Hi
    Im new to herbs....help please.

I have mint, rosemary & tarragon growing & overwintered in my garden.

Although the mint & Rosemary are ok, the tarragon, which looked dead, then suddenly struck up nice growth from the bottom has now blossomed into a lovely looking plant.

    However,

The leaves are really large & it doesnt look or smell as good as it did last year, when the leaves were smaller. Difficult to explain, but it just doesnt 'feel' right. Is it ok to use???? Is there a problem?

    Anyone know what I mean?

I would say that its too early for the plant to have properly "stock up" in oils, due to the lack of sun.
Also it could be that is a little old ? if its more than three years maybe you could start anew with fresh cuttings...
I am no expert though!! could be something else...

      Another Tarragon Question

I have 'Tarragon' which looks like pale rosemary - it was sold to me as Tarragon, but recontly on TV I saw Tarragon in a cookery programme and it had larger, wider leaves, looking quite different from mine.

Here's the question: are there two types of Tarragon?

I've know there is a Russian and a French Tarragon. Whether these differ in the way the look, I don't know.

Russian tarragon can be grown from seed so if you grew it from seed its russian and not worth having.(allegedly - i have never seen it or tasted it)....french would have been brought as a plant or taken as a cutting....mine is doing well after having died completely to nothing over the winter

            Good evening....

I don;t know a grat deal but with tarragon..there are two type the French and the Russian...

French can be a little temperamental...but has by far the better flavour...the Russain to me is rather bland almost tastless....

French is only half hardy...depepnding upon where you live...and should ideally be protected during the winter...

I wonder if yours is the Russian one ? That is more hardy..

            Best wishes

            Colin

Does anyone know where to get the French tarragon from, that isn't too costly? The reason I ask is that I have been looking on the net and the cheapest postage is £8 - the herb itself I've seen at £4.... and the thought of paying twice the cost in postage for the price of the herb, well, what a rip off!
