  • Supermarket herbs - cheap!

My local Morrisons are selling growing herbs half price at 50p a pot - and they were in very good condition. I bought Dill and Curly Parsley; they also had Flat leaf parsley, Mint and Chives.
I would have liked basil and coriander but they were sold out.
There's great advice for growing on these herbs at http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...rbs_58340.html

I tried planting out chives bought from Aldi (60p) in a window box. They failed pretty miserably and were just quite sickly and didn't really grow. In the end I threw them out and decided I'll go to a garden centre and buy some that have been conditioned to outdoors.

I tried two different ways of growing them:
    1. Leaving some as I bought them from the supermarket
    2. Cutting the others down to a few centimetres in height

Chives are usually pretty foolproof, so I'm not sure where you went wrong. Did you plant out the whole potful as it was, or did you try to split into individual plants?

Could have been the shock from being just being planted straight out ?

You can grow rosemary from the cut pieces supermarkets sell. (even better bargain when they're reduced!)

Should be OK and now is about the right time to take cuttings. You may be able to beg some growing sprigs from a neighbour or look in the local churchyard or cemetery there is usually Rosemary growing there and I'm sure nobody would mind you taking just a cutting or two.

My method was stick a couple of pieces in a small vase until it rooted and then plant it. I've got 2 this way!

I didn't split them, they just went in as individual plants.

I'm confused, Marcher, sorry! A pot of chives from the supermarket will have lots of individual chive plants in it, not just one plant. Its a pot full of young seedlings, essentially. So you could either plant each one out separately and have, maybe, 50 "plants" or you could split the potful into 4 or 5 clumps of seedlings or plant out the complete potful in one place without any splitting or thinning.
I would go down the clump method if I intended to grow them on.
