  • Growing Cumin

    Hello everyone,
    Has anyone tried growing cumin?
I understand it needs a long growing season, but its soo tasty in curries and useful as a medicinal herb, could it be grown in the southern counties?
    Thanking you

I don't know but I sowed some outdoors and it germinated here in the midlands. I'm going to try some in the greenhouse this year to see what happens.

LOVE cumin, mexican food is our fave so I really would love a good cumin plan on the go.

I've tried a couple of times with food shop bought Cumin seed and couldn't get it to germinate, I don't know whether it was the seed or the temperature. I think it's a semi tropical plant so will like lots of warmth.
      This link might help:

Gonna go for it and sow some seed now in the warm conservatory if they require heat (hope I don't frazzle them).
Heres hoping some seedlings come up !
I'll post a pic if they do.

Is it possible to use the leaves that sprout from the cumin seeds for seasoning? I planted some cumin seeds bought from the grocery store and they have sprouted, although the leaves are quite straggly.

Wow Red Pepper, you must have read my mind because I just popped into the Vine to post the exact same question! I'm going to pick up a packet of seed this weekend and give it a go. It would be good to compare results.

Total disaster for me. But I might have sown too late and got it in the greenhouse too late. Will be trying again in 2010 though.

Bad luck, but as you say there is always next year.

I will look out for your swap list with keen interest, I have already spotted you offering some very interesting squash seeds to other grapes as well, just hope I have something you are looking for when you post
