Looking for a simple one which tells you what to sow, plant and harvest each month of the year. Is there one or does it just come with experience??

The best all round, basic, Vegetable book, without a shadow of a doubt (am I overselling it?
) is "The Vegetable and Herb Expert" b Dr D G Hessayon.
Packed full of useful information without being Techie or Nerdie.
However, it does not really have a "January : Do this" style calendar, rather it has an alphabetical list of vegetables and what you need to do for each of themK's Garden blog the story of the creation of our garden

I like the RHS's Growing Vegetables, it gives a month by month summary at the back. But also the RHS website is useful RHS: Grow your own Veg.Last edited by Capsid; 18-07-2008, 08:33 AM.

Dr Hessayon, if you only buy one book (about 3 on amazon.co.uk). Or order it from your library: http://librariesnl.northlan.gov.uk/v...ind_1&ItemNr=2
You can then add to your collection as you gain knowledge/experience.
I tend to get all my books from my library, and then only buy the really good ones. All gardeners know better than other gardeners." -- Chinese Proverb.

i went to my library the other day and got loads of books, i'm still plodding through them and when i've finished will make a decision, this saves you spending loads of money on a book, that doesn't tell you everything you need to know...... and if there is a particular book you want to look at, they will order it for you

Thanks very much for taking the time to look this up. I am going to take a trip to the library tomorrow prior to purchase.Originally posted by Two_Sheds View PostDr Hessayon, if you only buy one book (about 3 on amazon.co.uk). Your garden centre will probably have them too (but I doubt for 3 quid though!) if you want a browse-before-buy - although I think the library is a cracking idea for a decent read-before-buyK's Garden blog the story of the creation of our garden

I have to agree that for simplicity, Hessayon is hard to beat, but for a more complete picture, Joy Larkom's Grow Your Own Veg is superb.Rat
