  • Can anyone remember the NHS free orange juice?

My mother (Scareysmum) is staying with us at the mo and we were just remembering the lovely gloopey orange juice that you used to get in a sort of medicine bottle - we think, free on the NHS.

Anyway, whilst we were trying to find out if it had a name we stumbled upon <<this nostalgia web site>> and have spent a happy Sunday afternoon remembering "stuff"

I'm afraid you have to be of a certain age to know/remember everything but it might be a bit of an eye opener for some of our younger members too.

    Hope you like it.

Oh how I remember that orange juice - there has never been anything like it. I must go and examine this site now and see what else I can remember!

Yes, "milk snatcher Thatcher" she was called but this orange juice was the concentrated sort that you add water to. Oh, 'twas loverly too.

I think you're right. Mum thinks it was free on the NHS so you would probably have got it from the baby clinic and, you're right - 'twas lovely

I remember going to the baby clinic with my mum and little sister once (I must have been off school for some reason) and mum getting orange juice in little bottles. I remember her getting rosehip syrup when my brother was a baby too.

I remember going with my elder brother and getting not only the orange juice, which I enjoyed but also we got a ration of Cod Liver Oil and Oh how I hated that stuff.

Some Sunday mornings I used to go with my Dad to Club Row in East London and in cold weather he used to buy me a glass of hot Sasperela(?) "cleans your blood" he used to say and that was delicious.

Still one Sunday we were down there and a bloke was selling off the back of a lorry in Essex Street, crates of satsumas. I had never seen a fresh orange let alone a satsuma. People were falling over themselves to get a crate (before the police arrived I think, truely "off the back of a lorry"). Dad got a box, Mum went mad that he had bought a whole box full "they'll go rotten before we can eat that amount". She needn't have worried! The start of my live long passion for satsumas.
I am certain that the day my boat comes in, I'll be at the airport.

                  - I remember being forced to take Cod liver oil too when I was little.

                  *cuts Scareysmum a filthy look

Mmm, Delrosa rose hip syrup. Have you ever made rosehip wine Shirley? I guess it might be like the syrup but with teeth

i remember the orange juice and we used to have malt extract too....ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh malt extract...sometimes we had the stuff with cod liver oil in it which was nicer than having to have the cod liver oil on its own but it did spoil the malt extract (prefer my malt single nowadays)

I only managed to pick enough hips to make apple and rosehip jelly last year. Will be more 'on the case' this year and might try making some wine.

According to the website, it was called Virol but I don't remember that.

You've just started OH and Scareysmum tucking into a jar of malt extract I have here - guess what I'll be buying from Holland and Barrett next time I'm in UK
