  • Black Onion Seed

I was in the supermarket today, and in the seasonings / dried herbs section they were selling jars of black onion seed. Now it looked like the seeds that you buy if you are growing onion from seed - does anyone know if it is. I wouldn't buy it for that reason but was just wondering.

I don't know if you could grow from them, but I think they are an Indian cookery ingredient. Think they can go in Naan breads and all sorts of other stuff.

There was a thread about this a while ago on the veg forum I think. I call 'em Nigella seeds or Kalonji (it's how my jars are marked when I buy them).

All of them, black onion, Nigella or Kalonji; I think are wonderful - I use them all the time. Even more so at this time of year as they make a fabulous addition to chutney. I've got a great recipe for a tomato, peach and black onion seed one that I can share, if you like the sound of it.

Fab if you make your own naan bread too.

I bought some to try and make my own Naan bread. Tried sowing them but nothing materialised so maybe they are toasted/treated in some way or something? They are Nigella seeds apparently, and taste nothing like onions!

Thanks all... yes it said on the jar that they are also known as Nigella seed. I was looking for ingredients to spice up my pickled cucumbers... might go back and get some to add to chutney.

They aren't actually Nigella [that we think of as Nigella] OR Onion
