anyone got freeview working on an old portable telly

    anyone got freeview working on an old portable telly

    Well the switch over was today

    I got the box conected it to my little telly upstairs via a video as the TV is so old it didn't have the right socket. Well the box is set up right but now I need a new indoor aerial. I've ordered one which had lots of good reviews. It arrives tomorrow.

    Now i'm wondering if I just have to face that we need to pay out for a better outside aerial and pay to have sockets in all the bedrooms which is money we don't have right now.

    so has anyone had success with the little old tellys and inside aerials?

    I think it would depend on how good a signal you get, but a freind of mine did connect up her little portable in her bedroom to a freeview box connected to an indoor aerial and got a watchable picture.

      We have a portable T.V. in the bedroom with a Freeview box attached (ours had the right connections already though) & the way we did it was to buy an aerial extension lead from Tesco (you should be able to get one from any electrical shop or big supermarket with computers etc.) The lead didn't cost that much, can't remember but think it must have been less than £10, you just get one with a double connection & plug it into your downstairs TV then plug your aerial lead into this & run the extension wire up along the edge of your stairs & under the door into the room you want, our lead was long enough but you can get a further extension lead if you need. I don't think you'd get very good reception with an indoor aerial but you may be lucky.

        it doesn't sound good does it. Even if I get a new telly I'll still be facing the aerial issue

        I ordered the aerial online so that I could send it back if it didn't work under the distance selling rules.

        A friend who is a few roads away has been successful with his upstairs telly he said he doesn't have an outside digital aerial. Just uses one on top of his telly.

        I've checked and my postcode suggests that this area has a good reception, I'm 2 miles from the transmitter.

        Oh well we'll see.

          You could be O.K. then from what you say Marathon with people near you getting it with an indoor aerial. Despite the fact that we live in a built up area where you'd expect good reception we have intermittent problems with phones, broadband etc., O.H. is always going fom room to room with his phone going 'I've got 3 bars now!'

            If you want to connect the freeview box direct to your tv, then you will have to buy a new f/view box, but it must have a modulator built in. It's so you can tune the tv in to it.
            The ones with scart sockets dont use uhf, so no scart no signal.
            Using the vcr on the av will work just as well. Good luck with your new indoor aerial.

              You don't need a new telly. That will make no difference.

              Have the switch over happened yet? Apparently upon switch over the freeview signal will be boosted significantly (as they're not broadcasting both any more), so it may be worth waiting until it happens.

                Yippi I've got 89 new stations which is more than the freeview suggested I would get but I can't seem to get ITV and channel 5.

                I keep adjusting the aerial but still nothing, I did however get them for a split second but that was it. Apart from standing on my head with head tilted back and arm to the left holding the aerial not sure if I'll find them.

                  I did wonder about this.

                  The first stage of the switch over has happened, yesturday we lost BBC2 and on the 7th go digital completly.

                  I just find it frustrating

                    This link may be of some assistance for you. It tells you which multiplexes are running at a lower power, and itv is one of them. It also tells you when they will be sent out at a stronger level.

                      thanks, not really understanding the info, I believe it suggests under mendip that the missing channels are being transmitted as low and then will increase 10 times over on the 7th so I think it means that I will be able to pick them up then.

                      Since the last scan they apear on the EPG so I'm not moving the aerial, infact I think I'll glue it to the spot

                        Spot on. They just haven't had the signal boosted yet.
