  • What bird?

It caught my eye whilst I was sat with Bean in the lounge.

I only spotted it because it was a reddy colour. Reddy orange breasted, with a grey head and a black and white "collar". From memory - it'd flown off again before I'd chance to get the camera.

Landed in our hedge, jumped about a bit then flew off.

I think it may have been some sort of Finch as it had a stubby beak.

Any twitchers know what it was?

Could it have been a bullfinch? That's my first immediate thought but I don't know if it has a collar. I'm still looking.

Aye, it was one of them - either bull, or chaffinch. I'm sure of it. First I've ever seen anyhoo.

D'ya know Nicos, I had to look it up again I couldn't remember what it was - must be me age

Anyway it's all a bit academic now because Wayne said he thinks it is a bull or chaffinch and I don't think redstarts occur very much in UK.

We had a bullfinch in a couple of days ago. Chaffinch is about spadger sized, bullfinch a little bigger (and the blokes are brighter coloured than a chaffinch).
