Dunno really, I think I read it somewhere here on the vine. Maybe it encourages rats or foxes or something, or maybe something to do with disease, just don't know.

I don't know you shouldn't bury chickens!
Why shouldn't you bury chickens?

It's an "empty" sort of feeling isn't it? I find it hardest still when I go and do the nightly count-up and get to 9 and there isn't any more to count. I know you shouldn't bury chickens, but I don't care about rules and regulations in my garden if they don't harm anyone else. I've buried Rose in the lawn with a small Olive tree on top so she doesn't accidentally get dug up. She's deep enough not to cause any smells etc, so I'm happy that she's still with me in her own wayOriginally posted by sunflower View PostHi Maureen, One of my ex bats Suki died yesterday.....just went to sleep and did'nt wake up, so very peaceful. I and my other hens miss her. I'm just so glad that she had five months of happiness. Although it's horrible for Suki to go, I will never regret having ex bats. They are so lovely and friendly and such a joy to be around them. xxx

Just to echo what everyone else said. If it hadn't been for you, Maureen, she'd never have tasted freedom and the sun on her wings

It's no consolation now to say that at least she had a bit of a happy life and an end free of fear but I'm sure it will be in the future. When chickens make up their mind to die there isn't much you can do about it, unfortunately.

So sorry for you Maureenhall. My daughter has chickens and everyone is a "child". She knows all their characteristics and even knows which egg comes from which chicken or at least swears that she does!! I am dreading the day when any of her babies dies. I point out the obvious (and they were young chickens when she got them-not battery) every so often but it's not until it really happens that you can feel the pain. Bless you for giving one a little knowledge of what freedom is like, even if it didn't last long.Last edited by Sanjo; 11-08-2008, 12:41 PM.

How sad.
Glad you were able to give her a bit of an adventure for the last few months of her life though.

Oh dear, it is indeed sad to lose a pet. I am sure Rose had a wonderful time with your family and well done for rescuing a battery hen.

I'm so sad. I came home from the lottie at lunchtime and went to check on the girls as always and found Rose dead in the coop. I don't know what the cause was, she seemed fine yesterday and this morning and all the others look ok too. I know it's bound to happen sooner or later but it's still sad when it does happen. At least she had an extra 6 months of good quality life since she came from the battery farm so at least I'm happy about that.
Bye bye Rose, it was such a pleasure to have known you xxxxxTags: None
