  • wedding flowers - what could I grow?

I am getting married in June this year and would like informal flowers for the table decorations.
Both mine and my other half parents have allotments and have offered to have a go at growing some flowers for me (they like me usually stick to fruit and veg but at least try with the usual bedding/basket plants).

Can anyone tell me what they could plant that would be ready at the end of June, would look good in a rustic vase and are purple/lilac/cream/yellow/white?

Foolproof if possible. I don't mind buying seeds or plugs.

A friend of mine got married last July, and her theme was 'an English Country Garden' we had afternoon tea, with a variety of English floral china and champagne, and all the tables had vases of fragrant cottage garden type flowers, hollyhocks, roses, pinks, sweet peas, etc can't remember all, but all were different, it was just beautiful, really pretty and the perfume gorgeous.

See if you can catch episode 4 of The Great British Garden Revival. The first half was all about cut flowers, with a focus on wedding flowers.

              June information from Flowers.org.uk

That's what should be flowering in June (that does depend on where you are though: The North being colder & later than the south).

Make a shortlist of what you want, then research when you need to do the plantings

Do be aware that the weather will affect when the flowers are ready by several weeks either way.

From experience......I suggest you have a back up plan

Do you have greenhouse/polytunnel/conservatory (preferably heated) to grow them in ? If we have a long cold spring like last year plants will be held back several weeks

Oh yes,as the others said ...... sweet peas

Thanks for all of your lovely replies.
Both sets of parents have greenhouses so hopefully can start things off in there. I will check out the tv show as I have seen lots that look lovely but wasn't sure what looks good when cut.

We are aware that things might go to pot with regards to weather but if that is the case I will have to buy in the flowers from the place that is doing the bouquets.
I was hoping to save a few pennies and the parents were happy to get involved.

I initially wanted a spring wedding so was thinking of daffodils and irises but I guess end of June is just too late. Same with bluebells?

I have seen some stunning purple sweet peas but I suppose any colour would be fine so might get a mixed pack too.
What about yellows? I like miniature sunflowers but not sure they would go with sweet peas and other delicate flowers.

Our daughter had a June wedding and she had ox eye daisies.

Right have looked at some of the links you lovely people have posted and come up with a few possibles. Could you possibly tell me from experience which (if any) are easy to grow.

                        Delphinium- blue
                        Freesia - yellow/purple
Gerbera (my fave, will probably have in bouquet) -White
                        Phlox
                        Zinnia
                        Sweet pea - purple/ white
                        Corn flower

Also if anyone knows if they are best to sow seeds/buy plugs etc that would be fab.

I think I have planted cornflower and sweet peas before to no avail. But then I am terrible with flowers.

Hmm, I don't want to sound like a party pooper but I think the only one you will have luck with will be the sweet peas. I grow Delphinium and cornflowers on very mature plants and they do have an abundance of flowers. Not from seed though in their first year. The others you will have similar problems.

I don't know if this will help but perhaps you could look here:
                            Higgledy Garden - Part 1
I have just bought some cut flower seed for the allotment from him but I'm sure that if you contacted Benjamin he would be happy to help.
I think I was put onto Higgledy Garden from reading one of veggiechicken's posts?

                            Good luck!

Not a party pooper at all, I'd rather know than plough ahead and have nothing to show for it!
