  • Passion flower Advice Please!

A friend has very kindly given me a passion flower plant, but I have no idea where to put it in my garden. I would really appreciate if someone could tell whether it likes a sunny position or shade? how tall does it grow? and shall I put it in border or in a big pot?

South facing next to a wall with something to climb on they can grow rather big. My father had on which covered a wall 40 sq ft (aprox)Plant in ground grows too big for a pot. Very nice when covered in flowers & even better when you get the fruits.

The river Trent is lovely, I know because I have walked on it for 18 years.

Hi Tiby, is it a common passionflower, Passiflora caerulea which has mainly creamy white flowers with purplish centres? If it is it will be fine outside in a sunny spot & O.K. to start off in a large pot but will grow quite big. I have one which started off in a pot & then rooted through the bottom of it & shot off all over the trellis it was against as well as round the door & window frame! If it's Passiflora edulis, the edible kind then it probably needs some protection & is better grown in a pot in a conservatory or greenhouse.

Thanks Bubblewrap and SueA, I dont know what type of passion flower it is. My friend bought the tray of six plants from a garden centre, but has lost the plant label etc. I think she was told by the garden centre people that it covers the trellises quite quickly, so Iwould assume that it is an outdoor one.

          Great plant, fairly rampant!
We can't tell where you are in the country (?) but it should be ok if you're down south. If not, protect it in the winter. They like a south or west facing wall, like other grapes have said.

Where do you live Tiby? This will determine whether you can grow it permanently outside, or whether it needs to be in a pot for protection (maybe moving into a greenhouse during winter). Having said that they do grow very big if conditions are favourable. I live in East Anglia and have had one in a pot for 2 years. It got so big I've now planted it in the border - West facing, and sheltered.

tiby, I live in long eaton and grow a passion flower in a chimney, so it can root through when it needs to.

Put it on a south facing they love sun, but beware they grow very fast. It will need well drained soil and plenty of water during the growing season.

Dont let kids near the fruits as the passion flowers grown in this country are not edible.

Too true. grown one from seed this year : already 1 metre tall in greenhouse. It's going on the south facing front of the house and taking pot luck in the winter...
