  • Looking for berries

    Hello everyone

I'm new here, and I'm wondering if I might be able to get some help, Please, as where to source a couple of berry plants that I would really like to grow.

I've done some looking on the internet and I just can't seem to find anyone who stocks these particular varieties, but I'm hoping that someone here may be able to help.

The ones I'm looking for are "Veitchberry" and "Kings acre berry", and if anyone could point me in the right direction, Please, I'd be most grateful.

    Thank you for looking

    Hello and welcome.

There are a few nurseries listed at the bottom of this old newspaper article that mentions King's Acre. Have you already tried these?
    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/gardenin...mper-crop.html

Edited to add: You might find more suppliers later in the year, when bare root plants become available.

Hello Rocco and welcome to the vine.
How do they differ to other hybrid berries out there?

Many thanks for that Snoop Puss; I have to say I haven't tried all those, I think what I'm going to have to do is write a standard email and just write to as many fruit nurseries as I can.

I tried plant finder and both were last listed in 2012 and 2008 respectively, it's just I saw them at Wisley and they looked so good that I just want to give them a go.

        Many thanks again

Jay ell, I think the reason I didn't find that one is the spelling, I was searching for "Veitchberry" as this is how it was spelt at Wisley; As for the difference, I don't really know, but I'd think that as these varities have been around as separate plants for some time, I imagine they're fairly unique in flavour/quality compared to other similar plants, Maybe.

Veggiechicken, Many thanks for the link, very interesting, I have what I believe is a Summer Berry, and he's right it's an incredible hybrid with the most amazing aroma they just smell like summer.

I'm going to be very interested to talk with Swaine if he decides to reply to this thread.

It looks like the Kings Acre Berry is going to be the hard one to get.

Many Thanks for the replies they've been helpful

I don't know anything specific about the berries you mention, but sometimes it happens that the reason not many nurseries list something is that the plant in question is not really worth growing when compared to alternatives - there's a reason why blackcurrants, gooseberries, raspberries etc are popular and widely available and that is that they grow and crop well under a wide variety of conditions.

Hi Rocco and other thread users,
Had a feeling I might be useful on the forum tonight hence me flying

Good-ish news first I have both the veitchberry and maybe the kings acre berry and shouldn’t be a problem propagating them for you ,

I say maybe on the kings acre without muddying the water to much I have found over the years there seems to be different strains of the same berry ( loganberry ) people think maybe 2, thorny and thornless but there are many strains!!!! ,

The kings acre I have occasionally suffers winter killing ( this is mentioned as one of its problems in some books ( as well
As 100s of Varieties of soft fruit I collect old fruit books that have the information of the old varieties) it says it ripens early July but I
Find a bit later July, I have seen pictures with thick canes the one I had has thinner canes than
What I’ve seen but you do have to be careful google searches do not always show correct Berry to photo shown and neither do some books!!!
If I can find a way to post pics I’ll put up some info

A lot of the older berries do have some issues which have stopped companies selling them which is a shame, but when we’re over 100yrs old sure we,ll have some issues too

I have just realised from that description that the weed that's been growing in my garden is the cutleaved bramble. I have never seen it flower and have just been cutting it down to the ground every time I see it and seems to be much weaker now. Do you think I should let it grow?

If you like blackberries, then give it a try - I feel the lack of flowers and the cutting-down may be connected some how :-)

It flowers on last years canes so if you cut them down it won't flower and if it doesn't flower it wont get fruit. Cut them out once you've harvested the fruit.
