    Fig Cutting

    My sisters father in law gave me a cutting off his fig tree in return for some elderflower cordial last year. The cutting appears to be doing well, it lost its leaves at the start of the winter as I expected.

    It still looks nice and healthy, I'm just a little concerned that the cooler weather we're currently experiencing will be a bit too much for it.

    Do I need to bring it indoors to keep it a little warmer? or is it too late for that now?

    Different species of fig react differently to harsh conditions, Peteyd, but none of them will stand really continual freezing temperatures (and it sounds as if we've such a period coming up just now). So I'd be inclined to give it some protection until this chilly period is over - not too late, give it a try. I assume it's in a pot at the moment so not too problematic. When it comes to planting it permanently try to give it a protected spot facing South (not East) with plenty of direct sunlight. There's lots of advice online how to restrict the roots to enhance fruiting and how to protect/enhance fruit. They're good fun and can be very productive. Good luck with it.

      Great, thanks. It is in a pot at the moment, I'll bring it indoors for a couple of weeks, just to give it a fighting chance.

        I finally planted mine out last Autumn, it is protected on the North side, so fingers crossed it makes it through the cold spell

          Mine (grown from cuttings from a friend) live in the unheated greenhouse all year, and they seem OK. Apparently they are sicillian figs. We usually get about three that rot the microsecond after ripening...
