  • Dwarf Fruit Trees in Pots

    Hi,

I have 3 dwarf fruit trees - apple, pear and appricot in large pots, about 21/2 feet tall. Do I still have to wrap the trunks with the sticky grease tape to prevent the wingless winter moth from laying her eggs?

Personally, I wouldn't worry about it - especially as it's unsightly. Fruit trees usually produce more than enough blossoms to set a good crop (I'd guess that most seasons, fewer than 1 in 10 flowers gets to form into a fruit, so there are plenty of spare flowers!). It won't matter if you lose some flowers to the caterpillars. You can always pick them off by hand before they cause much damage. You might not even have many winter moths in your area.

I use a mix of six scoops of compost three scoops of sand/grit and two scoops of perlite, the quantity is unimportant as long as the ratio is the same, if for seeds I use this mix, if I am potting on I add some blood, fish and bone, along with a small quantity of chicken manure pellets
