Hi Womble - it will depend on what creatures are inside - either spiderlings or caterpillars. If it is the latter it could be ermine moth.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Having a quick look on the web, it does seem to be an ermine moth. So it doesn't seem to do that much harm, should I leave it?
      Thanks for the info.

Not so sure Womble - just googled ermine moth damage and came up with a mixed bag of sites - some saying they cause serious defoliation.

I did some more googling this morning and decided it was too risky, went to cut the nest off and found this.

I think that is what you call good timing.

No, I removed the bit of branch and put it on a Hawthorn in the field behind my house.

Good on you Womble, I wish we had some hedgerow near by I wouldn't squidge half as many caterpillar's. It's not the butterfly or moth's fault they find my garden a nice place for a nursery...I just wish they didn't .

That's EXACTLY what I get on my apple, pear and cherry trees

They will chew your tree bare if you leave them.

They are tent caterpillars and very destructive.

I reluctantly have started to squish mine to get them under control.

This is very confusing, it seems they could be lots of different things.
                          Brown tailed moth.
                          Small Ermine Moth
                          Tent caterpillar.

I'm not sure if I should have destroyed them now or not.

I'm off to search the rest of the tree now though!

I think I recall that Ermine moth caterpillars aren't black

Hmm...had a quick Google- brown tailed moth caterpillars are brown and hairy, and the Ermine are cream and brown.
Yours look almost black and long and thin like mine!
