  • cordon supports

    Hi,
I'm wanting to make a dividing fence of cordon fruit trees.
I've put the posts in but now need to put in the support wires and I'm having trouble finding out how far apart to put them, some places say 12", some say upto 24". That seems quite a difference to me so wondered if anyone had any experience or had seen any in use anywhere

I'm planning on planting slanting cordons of apples, pears, gooseberries, currants and a kiwi if that makes any difference

    Thanks

The spacing of the wires depends on how big you plan to grow the cordons and how strong are your wires.

12" is too close and will look messy unless the wires are thin and the cordons are always going to be kept small (e.g. no more than 4-5ft).

    I'd go for 18" for a typical cordon (e.g 6-7ft).

If the cordons will reach more than 6-7ft above ground, I'd go for heavier-gauge wires spaced 24" apart.

That explains the different spacings I'd seen then, thank you

In case you haven't got your wire yet, Wilkos have got some good thick wire in. I got a roll for the greenhouse to hopefully train a grapevine.
