  • Can anyone identify this for me?

Any idea what this is? It is growing beside one of our Ash trees, and there is another in the hedgerow. I don't recognise the fruit and I can't fint it in any of my books.

Cutting into the fruit, which has four distinct lobes, each lobe contains a pip/seed with a bright orange skin, inside which is a white nut(?) which has a bright green centre when cut open.

I think I shall play safe and not eat it ...

Go with Paul on that one. No idea what uses, but there are probably some recipes if you go to the old books. Birds do love the seeds/fruits.

Spindle Tree - because the waxy interior of the seed case was used to wax the spindles for spinning (distaff and Spindle)

            Hows that for useless information?
