Just a quicky for anyone who may still be confused over growing Autumn fruiting Raspberries. These are a section of Joan J's. The 1st pic has both last years canes that were cut down to 3ft, these will fruit in Summer then removed. At the base are this years canes that will fruit in the Autumn then cut back to 3ft to fruit again next Summer.

So Autumn Raspberries fruit in Autumn and possibly Summer.

As opposed to summer raspberries which fruit in summer.
    And possibly autumn.

At the moment my Joan J are putting up new cases. Canes that come up 8n spring time are likely to flower in summer and be ready for harvest in autumn so are called Autumn Fruiting

Canes which pop up over summer will flower next spring and be ready to harvest in summer and are therefore Summer Fruiting.

some raspberries may produce canes in spring and summer and are Two Timers - do a happy dance and invest in a whipped cream mine.

Some Autumn Fruiting varieties can be coaxed into two timing by cutting the Autumn fruited canes back, instead of removing them.

        Is that any clearer?

What will Autumn fruiting raspberries do if you just leave the fruited canes untouched?

I always recall talking to someone at a nursery who said Summer and Autumn ones are the same.
The grow a cane, produce flowers then fruit then you cut them down.
The difference was that one had Winter in the middle of the process but that was our way of judging time, more specifically this year and last year. But the summer ones produced fruit on what was to them this years growth - as in growth produced during the last period of one year, not growth before and after Jan 1st.

Just eat raspberries when they're there and cut them down when they look really really dead - thats what I do

I can tie in my unfruited canes as the season here can be very late in starting, so at the moment I have 23 canes from last year, joan j and polka autumn canes, as last year spring did not start until into June, so it was too late for all to fruit , even if we did pick into December, I just trim them to about 5/6ft, and tie them in before the winter storms, we are still using those we froze down as when they did produce they really did go mega...magic, as with cooler weather, they ripen slower, but the taste is superb, so much better than the shop bought stuff..

Autumn Rasps fruit on the current years growth whereas Summer Rasps fruit on the previous years growth. If you were to cut last years Summer canes out, you would get no crop this year.

I treat my Autumn Bliss raspberries like that.

You'll probably have a dead bit on the top, that has flowered but new fruiting bits will come from the side of the canes. (I'm trying not to make this too technical!).
