Are the black plastic, 'little robot like' compost bins that councils give away any good?

I was going to build 2 wooden ones from pallets but when I rang council today to find out where the contents of our brown bins went and whether it was available to buy back they offered to send me a Compost bin (as it all goes to landfill booo!)

Are there any disadvantages with plastic ones (I just always imagine a cb to be wooden!)

    Thanks!

I use both. The lidded one rots down faster, I find - my wooden slatted ones take a good 9 months whereas the lidded one can be much quicker. But of course they don't take so much!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Same here! I have both and I actually prefer the smaller plastic lidded ones, they do seem to rot faster but there is less work to turn over.

I have six daleks which work really well - I've given away my wooden pallet compost bin which doesn't work very well.

I've noticed my smaller one (280L?) rots down waaaaaaaaay faster than the 330L one.. not sure why - I completely emptied both, moved the bins, mixed it up and split the contents between the two - back in Sept time I think... looekd this week and the small one is pretty much all compost -the other has a thick layer of mould, soi t's starting..

          Maybe they heat up faster?
