    Our Garden - Next Steps

At the beginning of 2009 we had made some progress with bringing our garden to some order. We had steps to halfway up the garden, we had a raised bed vegetable area and a new flat lawn area with seating and flower section. We had our lower patio area with newly erected greenhouse and our first plantings of clematis and roses were showing promise. The new greenhouse meant that I could get going with seeds and I began sowing. Because the garden was going to be evolving I knew that we would need many flower plants to fill bare soil patches. So as well as sowing for the vegetable patch I also sowed many flower seeds as well. From February to May I have been constantly sowing, potting on and hardening off plants. It has been a plant conveyer belt with constantly needing more bags of compost. OH has been busy building terraces into the middle section of the garden that leads to the summerhouse on the top part. He cleverly found a way of making wooden bricks that he could shape into curved areas, lifting the turf and replacing as flat areas and creating a terraced step effect within the lawn. We can now walk to the summerhouse much more easily. As he worked on this he created more planting areas and I have been digging out established plants and groundcover from the front garden and placing them in these new areas in the back. I have also planted many of the flowers grown from seed with more coming along in the greenhouse.
We now feel we have reached a stage where the garden hopefully will be more manageable. We still have the last extremely steep section behind the summerhouse to deal with. But this area is very wildlife friendly and I think it will always be rather wild. We have a family of foxes who live in this top part and we have taken many pictures and film of their antics for the past 10 weeks. I am looking forward to seeing everything grow on this year. I already have french and runner beans in the veg plot as well as squash, beetroot, lettuce, beetroot and many tomato plants in buckets and baskets. Everything is doing well so far although it is a battle with the slugs and pests. I have planted up troughs and baskets with pansy, petunia, lobelia, cineraria, mesenbrythams, godetia and nemetia all grown from seed. Still to be planted in the veg patch I have leeks, sweetcorn, celery and courgettes. And to stay in the greenhouse I have aubergine, peppers and chillis.
I will try to upload some pictures and update as the season progresses.
