Toms from Tesco's!

Eh up.

Nope.

But, i got good success with Grushovka and Amish Pastes from Real seeds. Not nobbly at all. Both are on my list to grow indoors in the greenhouse when I get it.

I'll second the Amish Paste. And we got some nice toms off Costoluto Fioretino too, no blossom end rot problems, despite being treated really badly

I've google image'd Amish Paste and they appear to be a large plum tomato?

Are they bush or cordon grown?

PS Costuloto and Grushovka look to be nobbly! eek!!!

nope, but................ the baby plums i have 100% germination from in the early toms trial are tescos, saved seed, unfermented.

so i fail to see why you couldn't try it with the big beefy ones? whether they will come true or not remains to be seen, but, i would think they would, i mean they are probably grown on masse, so not likely to be cross-pollinated? so only way to tell if they are f1's is grow em and see what happens.

well it seems to work for me ;D

i get a lot of satisfaction from trying to grow stuff that other people ( not like on here) wouldn't consider even trying.

Ive has some cherry tomatoes from waitrose and some medium from the coop and planted there seeds straight after slicing, they grew fine and tasted good so it can happen.

Amish Paste are technically a plum, but they are huge (some of mine were bramley sized, no kidding) and delicious raw as well as cooked. They're a cordon.
Costoluto Fiorentino aren't as knobbly as some other beefsteak I've grown?! I'll probably have a plant or 2 of them again this year but AP will be taking up a lot of space

I've done the same as bride - planted f1 cherry tomato seeds.- i think in store they were called santini, I got about 40 plants from two toms and a great variety of flavour and sizes. This year i've saved the tastiest seed and will be sowing to see if i can repeat this to start developing a home grown strain,

with luck and a couple of seasons you could have your own beefsteak snadger.

Snadger - most beefsteaks are not F1 hybrids - so I'd definitely give it a go.

I have some excellent beefsteak seeds from France. One saved (quite knobbly and huge but fantastic flavour) and one commercial( slightly less large, less knobbly but good)

PM me if your interested in trying a few seeds...you could then try a few from supermkt and still have a couple as contingency...save the best resulting seeds.

No Blossom end rot probs.... but they get better regular watering if you can grow them in the greenhouse boarder (trouble is digging it out and replacing soil every couple of years)...rather than pots.

The flavour is always best outside(yield lower)...but sadly we have had a lot of blight probs down here the last couple of years.

Thought Costoluto were pants....worst of the four beefsteaks we tried...to be fair outside ones were all blighted though.

Thanks for the offer Paul but I might have a go with the Amish Paste as to be honest I've been looking for a large plum tomato for drying purposes. I'll also try the Tesco variant as a bit of an experiment. I've already got my Shirley F1 seeds, Gardeners Delight which I always grow and some Roma plum, a few Moneymaker and god knows what else when I look in my seed box! Lol Cheers mate!
