  • I've just been offered an allotment...what next!

I've literally just had that call from the lady of the allotments asking if i'd like a plot? I've jumped at the chance but i'm not sure what questions to ask when i meet them or anything.

If anyone could give me some advice i'd be most grateful.

    Many Thanks

    Duronal.

The only question you need to ask is..........when can I start?

    Congratulations duronal!

hmmm the water thing could be an issue i guess, I'm not too worried about the shed as the plot is less than 600m away from the house. polytunnels is a goody and maybe this means i can get a green house......HOORAY!...well maybe

ask Lynda for the polytunnel link, she has a brilliant one that i am after from ebay £50!!!!

i have to wait till i have an allotment though cos it wont fit in my garden

if they don't have a stand pipe, water butts, buckets whatever you can collect water in , you could border the allotment with free buckets from the co-op, keeps the soil in, and collects rain water.sink em in the ground round the edge, then you can even put some stuff in every other one ( fill em with beer as slug traps )

Yaaaay, well done to you. If you're planning to grow soft fruits or asparagus, some sites ask that you apply for permission to do so in writing, I had to when I got mine. I'm feeling very lucky - at work we did a secret santa and there was a limit of £5 set for pressies, but one of the guys that I work with gave me a voucher giving me 50% off anything at a local garden centre so I'm planning on buying some of the ready to use fold away cloche/polytunnel type thingys.
Good luck with your lottie - I bet you can't wait to get down there and start digging
(not quite sure what my 50% off voucher has to do with your lottie, but I'm sooooo chuffed with it I wanted to share it with you )

Congrats on your allotment. A good time to get it too, at least you will have a chance to get some cleared for the spring planting. Off the top of my head, you could find out about arrangements for compost/manure deliveries, bonfire regulations, is there a shop, do they allow BBQs?
I so wish we could find somewhere for our site.

I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

You might not be that fussed about a shed to store stuff in BUT it's always good to have some extra roof space from which to collect water.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Thanks for all the help guys,

My list of Q's for tomorrow looks like this:

Water - where is the nearest point/is it provided?

Main Gate - How far is the plot from this.

                        Fires/BBQ's - regualtions

Allotment Shop - Is there one?

                        Compost/Manure delivery is this possible?

Are there any known onsite diseases? e.g club root build up etc etc.

I'll let you know how my meeting at 10:30 goes and i'll report back.

                        Many Thanks

Also, whether you can plant trees, can you speak to the last plat holder about their previous rotations OR how many years since it was last worked If there's any equipment available to hire, like strimmer/mower/hedge-trimmer/rotavator. Whether there are any vandalism/theft issues.
                          Apart from that, enjoy!!!
