  • I got an allotment!

After joining the waiting list last year and being told at that point it was a 2.5 year wait, I was suddenly contacted at the weekend and told there were several plots available. Has a look on Sunday and picked one! Its 10 rods (I have no idea what that is in new money) and is mostly covered in nettles and grass. Having had a bit of time to poke and dig around, the weeds are coming up pretty easily (although I daresay there will be bits of root still lurking that I will have to keep my eye out for) and there are some redcurrent and gooseberry bushes lurking in the undergrowth. They have been cut back to ground level but are starting to sprout so fingers crossed they will spring into life!

I have been told the plot was well-looked after before the owner retired from allotmenteering and the soil under the weeds is looking good so I have high hopes.

First plan is just to clear enough space to get some tatties and oinion in and hopefully create an asparagus bed and then take it from there!!

Am really excited and a little bit nervous, but people seem very friendly so think I should be able to glean some good advice!
If it ain't broke...fix it til it is!

Well done on getting an allotment, dont try and do it all at once, cover some of it with card or something while you dig some of it. Take out the weeds by hand dont be tempted to rotavate. Once you have planted / sown something its a great achievment.

    and ends with backache

When I had an allotment I found other allotmenteers the friendliest and most helpful folk.
